Recurring-cost worksheet
A grocery-delivery membership can remove a delivery fee and still cost more overall. The honest comparison includes the membership, delivery and service fees, any item-price difference, optional tip or bag charges, and the number of orders you will really place.

1. Compare membership with pay-as-you-go
Use the same basket, delivery window, address and tip choice for both columns. Put a charge in “other per-order costs” only if it differs between the two plans.
2. Know what the formula excludes
| Input | How to collect it | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Membership equivalent | Annual price ÷ 12, plus any separate annual charge ÷ 12. | Comparing an annual upfront fee with one month of savings. |
| Delivery and service fees | Use two carts built at the same time for the same slot. | Assuming “free delivery” also removes service fees. |
| Item-price difference | Compare a repeatable basket with your store receipt or pickup price. | Using one heavily promoted basket as a permanent average. |
| Tip and optional charges | Use the choice you would make under either plan. | Counting the same tip as a membership saving. |
| Orders per month | Count completed orders from recent statements. | Using the number you hope to place after joining. |
3. A fictional example, checked
A 12 monthly membership, four orders, no member delivery fee, a 7 pay-as-you-go delivery fee, and identical 3 service, 5 item-price and 4 other costs produces 60 per month with membership versus 76 pay-as-you-go. The 7 per-order fee gap recovers the 12 membership after 1.71 orders, so the first whole order count that passes break-even is two. At four orders, the fictional annualized difference is 192. Promotions, minimum baskets and skipped months can reverse it.
4. Decision table: join, wait or use pickup
| If this is true | Next action | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Your expected orders are above break-even in most months. | Check renewal price, cancellation steps and excluded delivery windows before joining. | Terms screenshot/PDF and calendar reminder |
| You only cross break-even during a short promotion. | Price the post-promotion month separately. | Promotion end date and regular fee |
| Item markups vary sharply. | Track a small repeat basket for three orders before deciding. | Receipt, in-app price and substitutions |
| Pickup removes most fees and fits your route. | Compare travel cost and time instead of treating delivery as the only alternative. | Miles/transit fare and door-to-door minutes |
| Cancellation is unclear. | Do not treat the trial price as the full cost. | Renewal date, method and confirmation route |

5. Build one auditable comparison
- Choose ten staples you buy repeatedly; avoid cherry-picking only sale items.
- Build the same basket in membership and non-member paths without submitting either order.
- Record unavailable items and substitutions separately; a lower total can mean a smaller basket.
- Run the calculator with your actual recent order count, then stress-test one order fewer.
- If you join, put the renewal date and a reminder before it on your calendar.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance on trials and auto-renewals recommends reading the offer terms, knowing how and when to cancel, noting the end of promotional pricing and checking statements for unexpected recurring charges. Readers elsewhere should also check the consumer rules that apply in their country.

Next action: compare one identical basket under both checkout paths, save the current terms, and only then use your expected monthly order count to decide.
