What does a homemade batch actually cost?

Enter the real package price, the quantity bought and the amount used in your recipe for each ingredient. This calculator distinguishes the cost of ingredients actually allocated to the recipe from the total checkout price of the whole packages you must purchase. Those numbers can differ substantially—especially when you only need part of a large bag.

Without JavaScript: Use the worked example and formula below to calculate recipe costs manually.

Enter up to five ingredients. Leave an entire row empty if unused; partially completed rows will show a correction message. All prices must use the same currency and all weights use grams.

1. Rice or another grain
2. Beans or other protein food
3. Vegetables
4. Sauce or seasonings
5. Additional ingredient

Results appear here after you enter at least one complete ingredient row and the number of portions.

How the math works

For each item, allocated ingredient cost = package price × (grams used ÷ grams per package). Add allocated costs and divide by the number of portions. To show the immediate checkout outlay, we multiply the package price by the number of whole packages needed (rounding up). Actual checkout totals may also include taxes, deposits, delivery fees, sales or coupons not entered here.

This example helps explain why an affordable per-serving recipe may still require spending more at the register. Leftover ingredients can be used in another meal if stored safely; they are not automatically waste.

Four checks before choosing the cheapest meal

  • Will you use leftover packages? Otherwise the real cost to your household may be higher than allocated cost suggests.
  • Is the recipe appropriate for everyone eating it? Account for preferences, allergies and any medically required diet.
  • Does the amount made match your appetite and household? A small unit cost does not guarantee that a portion meets individual nutritional needs.
  • Can the prepared food be stored safely? For most cooked leftovers, USDA advises prompt refrigeration and generally using refrigerated portions within three to four days, or freezing suitable extras.
