Compare two grocery packages fairly
Two packages can have different prices because they contain different amounts. Enter each package’s price and weight in grams to calculate the unit price per 100 g. Use the same currency and compare similar products; a lower unit price does not automatically mean better nutrition or value if you cannot use the whole package.
Without JavaScript: To compare prices manually, divide each package price by its weight in grams and multiply by 100. Use the same currency for both products.
A five-question decision check
Price is one factor, not the entire buying decision. Use this worksheet after the calculation.
| Question | Check |
|---|---|
| Are these products roughly equivalent in type, ingredients and intended use? | |
| Does the package size match the amount the household can use before spoilage? | |
| Have I checked relevant allergens, storage instructions and nutrition labels? | |
| Are there delivery, membership or additional charges that affect total cost? | |
| Do I have enough storage space for the larger package? |
Practical example: if a package costs 4 currency units for 400 g, the comparable unit price is 1 per 100 g. If another costs 6 for 800 g, its price is 0.75 per 100 g. Buying the larger package only saves money if the food is used safely and you actually need the quantity.
